The path of blood through the heart

Oxygen-poor blood enters the right side, gets re-oxygenated in the lungs, and oxygen-rich blood leaves the left side. Follow the complete loop.

The heart is a double pump. Follow the blood one full circuit.

Step by step

  1. Right atrium receives deoxygenated blood from the body.
  2. Blood flows to the right ventricle, which pumps it to the lungs.
  3. In the lungs, blood picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.
  4. Oxygenated blood returns to the left atrium.
  5. It flows into the left ventricle — the heart's strongest chamber.
  6. The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood out to the whole body.

Two loops in one

  • Pulmonary circuit: right side → lungs → left side.
  • Systemic circuit: left side → body → right side.

Valves between the chambers keep blood moving forward. Practise labelling the blood-flow path below.
