How to convert fractions to decimals

Divide the numerator by the denominator to turn any fraction into a decimal. Here is the method, including what to do with repeating decimals.

To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide the numerator by the denominator.

34=3÷4=0.75\frac{3}{4} = 3 \div 4 = 0.75

Repeating decimals

Some fractions never terminate. For example:

13=0.333…\frac{1}{3} = 0.333\ldots

When this happens, write the repeating part with a bar: 0.3‾0.\overline{3}.

Quick check

If the denominator has only the prime factors 2 and 5, the decimal terminates. Otherwise it repeats. Practise converting randomised fractions below.
